KILKENNY’S FRIARY STREET BRIGADE

THE TRUE FRIARY STREET REPUBLICANS

“THE FRIARY STREET BRIGADE”

The true Irish Republicans in Kilkenny are called “the Friary Street Brigade”, led by the artist Daithi O’h-Uallacháin (chairman) – they are organised by Michael McGrath, Runai.

They are recognised by the old republican families in Kilkenny such as the Oakes family who were active with a hero, 21-year-old Sam Oakes, slain during the Civil War where the Black Cat garden is today- and they were supported by the late great Irish Republican author and historian Jim Maher RIP.

Rev Fr Mike Burgess OFM Cap is also associated with the group, a descendant of Cathal Brugha his job is to bless the heroic dead every Easter Sunday outside the Friary. They are also acknowledged and recognised by Catherine Dermody who attended this year, grand niece of Section Leader Michael Dermody who fell in action there.

Runai Michael McGrath is an Independent candidate in the present city elections, his stated objective to house the Irish first.
